I wear a plain white helmet called a Nolan N100. It looks like a full-face, but the jaw piece flips up on hinges just in front of the ears so that you can expose you face if you need to. I think it's great for commuting as I can flip up the jaw-piece if I want to talk to a gasoline attendant or just want to get a faceful of fresh air.
The helmet has the same certification as a Snell or DOT 3/4 open-face helmet. The jaw piece is pretty sturdy and I'm sure it would give you more impact protection that an open face, but less than a proper full-face
